IRD - Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement
The Institute of Research for the Development is the pre-eminent French research organisation dedicated to the sustainable development of the countries of the South.Created in 1944 (formerly ORSTOM) and attached to both the Ministries of Research and of Foreign Affairs, it is a non-profit government-funded public organisation.

IRD general missions are to conduct research, training and consultancy to promote the economic, social and cultural development in the Southern countries.

IRD activities cover a wide range of fields and disciplines, with a focus on the relationship between man and his environment in the tropical and Mediterranean countries.

IRD approaches seek not only to enhance developing country’s capacity to anticipate the major development challenges regarding the societies, health, environment and living resources, but also to bring research tools and resultant new applications into sustainable development for the better livelihood of people.
