INPE - Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espacias CPTEC/INPE is a 12-year-old institution that carries operational activities of weather and climate, monitoring and forecast, supported by a strong component of research and development. The staff comprises 330 people of which 65 have Ph.D. degrees. The operational activities include running several models, the ingestion, processing and product generation of satellite data, and the dissemination of weather forecasts and seasonal outlooks.
Research areas involve a broad range of subjects including numerical weather prediction of the atmosphere and oceans, data assimilation, physical parameterisations of convection, radiation, soil, vegetation atmosphere interactions; surface hydrology; climate dynamics including intraseasonal, interannual, interdecadal and decadal oscillations, as well as climate change. Tropical convection, its features and climatologies, is also a subject of research. The research staff averages about 60-refereed publications per year. Many applications have been developed as a direct result of research and may be seen in www.cptec.inpe.br. |
